Installation & Care

Careful preparation helps create a stable and attractive stepping path.

1. Prepare the base: Install a minimum of approximately 50–75mm of compacted base material, such as suitable road base or crusher dust.
2. Add bedding sand: Use approximately 20–30mm of bedding sand to help level each stepper.
3. Position the stones: Bed each piece securely and check that it sits evenly without rocking.
4. Plan the spacing: Approximately 450–650mm centre-to-centre is a useful starting point; adjust to suit the users and pathway design.
5. Prepare surrounding areas: Weed mat beneath surrounding gravel or pebble surfaces may help manage weeds and maintain a tidy finish.
6. Fill the gaps: Use fine gravel or surrounding mulch to complement the sandstone and finish the pathway.
7. Allow for drainage: Maintain a slight fall where appropriate so water can drain away from the pathway.
8. Clean periodically: Rinse with water as needed to remove dirt and loose debris.

Sandstone’s appearance can change naturally with exposure and weathering. Although sealing may not be necessary in many settings, a suitable natural stone sealer can be considered where additional stain resistance is required.
